artist statement

I record the human need to be authentically seen. My work explores connection, separation, transition, vulnerability and grit. Painting and drawing myself and people I know, love and encounter, I work in oil on canvas, graphite on paper, and mixed media, all from photography I create and discover, often in spontaneous moments. My subjects vary by age, ethnicity and background while sharing a strong sense of self and a willingness to be known. Often cropped tight and to the edge, my figures confront with vivid color at or beyond human scale and peer directly at the viewer with an in-your-face individuality.
